about

A slow sad country folk song

lyrics

Coal Generations
(c) 2023 W. R. Cantrell, Jr.

Walkin’ down the red clay road, it was the middle of July
It was only 6 AM, but my throat was already dry
Might be my imagination, taking over my mind
When we got to the mine entry, I left it all behind

We climbed into the cage, my dad, my son and me
Descending into the depths of hell, to look for a new seam
Of coal, that’s our goal, to bring it back up safe
We done it, a thousand times before, much to my relief

We sank into the mountain, the cage abruptly stopped
Mine explosions filled the air, our souls embraced the shock
The final death glow aura, became our only friend
Suddenly the cage we’re in, started to ascend

We got back to the surface and we stumbled to the ground
My dad he was unconscious and my son he made no sound
They carried us to the medic, but he sent us on our way
I told my son to look for work, that this was his last day

I’m a coal miner, and I put food on the table
I’m a coal miner, as sure as my father’s name
I’m a coal miner, and I work when I am able
I’m a coal miner, but my son will break this chain
